10. Loggerhead Sea Turtle
The loggerhead sea turtle, Caretta caretta, is a species, representing the family of sea turtles (Cheloniidae), reaching a length of up to 100 cm. It is found in temperate, subtropical and tropical seas all over the world. It occurs very rarely in the Black Sea, passing accidentally through the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus. Two specimens have been seized on the Bulgarian coast and the last one was caught in the Black Sea of Romania in 1967. The main diet of the species consists of crustaceans, mussels, fish, jellyfish, and less often skins. It lays up to 150 eggs with a size of about 40 mm. Loggerheads may display multiple paternity. Multiple paternity is possible due to sperm storage. The female can store sperm from multiple males in her oviducts until ovulation. A single clutch may have as many as seven fathers, each contributing sperm to a portion of the clutch.
