Roe deer

Roe deer

The roe deer, Capreolus capreolus is a medium sized herbivorous mammal of the order Artiodactyla. The species is widespread in Bulgaria and is a common hunting object. It lives in the more northern parts of Europe, Asia Minor and around the Caspian Sea. Only male individuals have horns - short and straight. In winter, males lose their horns, but in spring for the new breeding season they grow again. The male in our exposition reaches close to the maximum size of the species and holds a silver medal for Bulgaria. The roe deer is active mostly at dusk. When its habitats are quiet, undisturbed by humans, it also feeds during the day. Very fast and graceful animal. It lives in high places or mountains, but occasionally ventures into pastures and sparse forests.
