Botany

The exhibition is presented in 12 separate showcases. The first showcase consists of 10 soil samples of the most common soils in Bulgaria. There are two showcases, which present the more widespread edible, poisonous and protected species of mushrooms in Bulgaria, arranged according to ecological principle, as well as the main types of lichens that occur in our nature. The systematics of plants is demonstrated in 10 of the showcases. There are preparations and 107 herbarium materials from representatives of red algae (Rhodophyta), green algae (Chlorophyta), moss animals (Bryophyta), Lycopodiophyta, Equisetophyta, Pteridophyta, conifers (Pinopsida) and the largest families of the flowering plants( Magnoliophyta) in the Bulgarian flora.

The exposition in the hall ends with a showcase related to the botanical development and basic principles of collecting and producing herbarium specimens. It includes a panel with herbarium specimen of various types of seaweed collected from the Black Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. They are an inheritance from the rich collection of the encyclopedic museum of the former French college in Plovdiv.

An artificial wood stump has been placed in the center of the hall. It has inlaid stem of common beech (Fagus sylvatica) with distinct annual growth rings on, that visitors could count and find out how old the tree is.
